When managing people you must educate and teach people to think on their own and become somewhat self-sufficient. Train your replacements so you can have more people to whom to delegate responsibility, right?
Las Tzu was obviously not in sales, nor did he own his own business in the way we know it today. We live in an “I want it now society” where most people are too impatient to wait for anything. definitely too busy to stop and learn. In business, we solve problems. “Give a man a fish; feed him for a day”… Teach a man to fish on his own?… STOP RIGHT THERE.
What does the man want?
So sell him the fish! Sell it to him every day if he keeps coming back for more. Some people would say “Don’t teach them because if they learn they won’t come buy from you.” NEWS FLASH – In most cases they don’t want to learn. They just want the fish. If you don’t sell it to them, they’ll find someone who will. Some people will actually take the time to learn, realize it takes some effort on their part and still go buy fish. In business we sell fish! Teach your employees to fish. In fact, teach them everything about fishing so they will be better fish salesmen and sales-women.
From time to time in business you have to remember why you’re in this thing. Sometimes we get lost in the idealism of it all and forget to do the things that feed our families and fuel our passion. I totally believe in the truth and honor of helping others. But right now we’re talking about sales. We’re talking about getting paid (notice that I like to keep it real).
Here is how you can sell, sell, sell… Make a lot of money and still feel great about it.
- NEVER rip anyone off
- Always provide something of value… to them – Not just to you
- Remember to give back.
Hope this hits home today. Now, go sell some fish.
